On Sunday, Josh and I play in a co-ed "non-contact" soccer league, however once again it was not "non-contact." Within the first 5-6 minutes of the game the almost 300lb goalie decided to take me out from behind. I screamed, I have to admit it. It hurt super bad, no bad language, just a scream and then I wanted to walk off. Instead, Josh and Paul (a guy filling in on our team, very nice and good soccer player), carried me off. Thinking it was just sprained I laid on the bench and rode the pine the rest of the game with my foot elevated and iced. Once again after the game I wanted to walk out, but Josh had to piggy-back me out the car. Painful! It was hard to have it not elevated. I was the size of nice grapefruit even when it was elevated and iced so needless to say even when we were at the Urgent Care facility (surburia version of an ER for non major things) I was still thinking it was just a sprain until the doctor came in. I think he took one look at it and knew it was broken, but I hadn't had my X-ray yet so he didn't say it was quite yet. Within about an hour of being there I knew it was broken in 2 places. The on-call orthopedist was called and notified of my injury and he was sent my x-rays on the computer.
Later Sunday night around 9:30pm Dr. Watters called and gave me the good/bad news that it was not only broken in 2 places, but 3 places altogether. The good news was that he had a spot for surgery open on Monday around 11am and that someone would call us with a confirmed time. No one called and there was a mix up, but I still had my surgery on Monday around 2pm. It was supposed to be an hour, but of course as the cookie crumbles my ankle had more damage then even the 3 broken bones. A ligament had been torn as well and so it had be screwed back on as well. I have a lot of hardware in my ankle and apparentlly it won't be out of there for a year or maybe never. I am wondering if the metal detector will go off at the aiport over spring break on our way to Vegas? Should be interesting. :)
On the bright side I get to wear shorts or capri pants and be in my "comfy" clothing for 12 weeks. My recovery time went from 8 weeks to 12 weeks with the torn ligament and Josh is excited to report that I will be using a handicapped sticker when getting around when he is driving me as I am not allowed to drive as well.
Soccer has been the a great addition to my work-outs and the doc says even though long distance running may be out of the picture, short bursts with adrenaline pumping should be okay so soccer I will continue to play!
I love the sock on the toes! I bet they get chilly!
